THE IID – THE SOUTH AFRICAN INSTITUTE OF THE INTERIOR DESIGNS PROFESSIONS

Living Image is proud to be an affiliate member of the IID – The South African Institute of the Interior Designs Professions which was established in August 2006 as part of a modern step up from the South African Guild of Interior Decorators (Sagid), and which itself had been a sub-organisation of the British guild for more than a century.

WHY USE A MEMBER OF THE IID (OR ANY OTHER PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION)?

The purpose of all umbrella organizations is to create a pool of professional businesses that the public can use, secure in the knowledge that each is qualified for the task needed and with the safety net that in the unlikely event of a complaint, dispute, unprofessional service rendered or even malpractice, the organization will intervene on the public’s behalf.

Each organization has its own set of rules to ensure high standards of behaviour from its members, often accompanied by monetary penalties and even expulsion in the event of a member failing to uphold its high ethical standards or bringing the organization into disrepute.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM AN INTERIOR DESIGNER OR DECORATOR

Few people would ask their hairdresser for legal advice or their plumber about investing on the stock exchange - most would go a lawyer or financial expert because they have been correctly trained and have many years experience in their fields. Similarly, members of the IID are qualified professionals, having graduated from specialist design schools and/or have many years practical experience in the field of interior design and decorating.

Their main role is to assist in coordinating the interior of a home or business to help create an aesthetically pleasing and practical living or working environment. They constantly deal with goods and products that the general public might not discover and they are aware of the latest decorating trends and how to interpret them locally.

Mistakes can be very expensive and it is best to avoid them. A trained professional eye can assist by automatically integrating flooring, ceilings, lighting, texture, colour, window treatments, furniture, etc and ensuring that these components all work together for the specific requirements of each individual client.

Budgets and total cost are key components of every project, and with their wide experience and constant involvement in the industry, a professional can help obtain the best financial allocation within each project.
